Research

I am Professor of Healthcare Applications of Design at PDR, Cardiff Metropolitan University. My work applies user-centred design combined with advanced computer-aided design and manufacturing methods to improve the way healthcare is delivered.

I have authored many academic publications and disseminated my work internationally. My research and its intrinsic link to transforming the way healthcare is delivered formed part of a high-impact case study for REF 2014 and led to a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in 2015.

Commercial

I have experience developing an ISO 13485 compliant commercial team with broad-ranging customers in UK hospitals, research groups and industry. My commercial expertise is an important mechanism in the identification of relevant research that is targeted to address global healthcare challenges.

I work with medical scan data processing software (Mimics), computer-aided design software (Geomagic FreeForm Plus & Fusion 360) and manufacturing processes (polymer/metal additive manufacture and CNC).

Together with friends, Tom Wheeler and Marc Lloyd, I am also a Director of Trinity Creative Ltd. We design and make adaptive sports products that are personalised to the needs of individual people. This video highlights the history and hints at the future of the company.

Collaboration & Education

I take a leading role in collaboration, dissemination and in supporting uptake of novel design engineering approaches in healthcare. Working across disciplines, understanding what people want from products and supporting others in their career ambitions is something I relish.

I have coordinated numerous conferences, workshops and webinars. Funding has been awarded from sources including the British Council, local government, research councils, foundations and industry. Further details are on the Esteem page.

An honorary position as Design and Research Consultant at Swansea Bay University Health Board further reflects my objective to maximise access to the newly developed design engineering and manufacturing solutions in healthcare. I also run the Centre for Applied Reconstructive Technologies in Surgery website. I am also President of the global ADT Foundation who promote education and global conference programmes in the use of technology for head and neck reconstruction. I designed the Foundation's new website and have established a webinar series, which has attracted a wide range of international participants since I became President.

Together with my colleague, Emily Parker-Bilbie, the support of Prof. Jeff Lewis and others at Cardiff Metropolitan University, we're delivering Master's level accredited courses in custom medical device design. Find out more at www.spd-academy.com

Sustained contribution to knowledge, development of novel design engineering approaches, combined with a commitment to collaboration and equity has led to much wider uptake in the UK NHS and healthcare systems around the world. I love what I do and enjoy working with others who share my passion.
